Online Regex Tester and Debugger

A regex tester (regular expression tester) is an indispensable developer tool that lets you write, test, analyze, and debug regular expressions in real time against a target test string. Regular expressions are powerful but notoriously difficult to write correctly on the first try due to their dense and cryptic syntax. Instead of running your regex blindly in code, compiling your application, and waiting for the execution results—a frustrating trial-and-error cycle—you can paste your test data into our tool and see all matches highlighted instantly as you type. This immediate visual feedback loop is critical for verifying that your pattern captures exactly what you intend, and more importantly, that it does not inadvertently capture text it shouldn't.

How to Use the Regex Tester

1
Enter Pattern: Type your regular expression in the pattern field located between the forward slashes. This field accepts standard JavaScript regex syntax. Use the adjacent flags field on the right to specify modifiers like g, i, m, or s.
2
Toggle Flags: For convenience, you can click the quick flag buttons to toggle common modes: global (g), case-insensitive (i), multiline (m), or dotAll (s).
3
Enter Test String: Paste or type the text corpus you want to evaluate against in the Test String box. This could be a block of code, a log file excerpt, or a list of user inputs.
4
See Results: Matches are vividly highlighted in the output panel. Below the highlighting, you'll find a detailed match breakdown showing the match index, character position, and all extracted capture groups, making complex regex debugging much easier.
5
Use Presets: Don't reinvent the wheel. Click any common pattern button (such as Email, URL, Phone, Password, Hex Color) to load a production-ready, battle-tested regex pattern instantly.

Understanding Regex Flags

Regex flags modify how the pattern is interpreted and executed by the regular expression engine. g (global) instructs the engine to find all matches in the string, rather than stopping after the first successful match. i (case-insensitive) makes the pattern ignore character casing, so "Hello" and "hello" are both considered valid matches. m (multiline) changes the behavior of the ^ and $ anchors, making them match the start and end of each individual line within a multi-line string, not just the absolute start and end of the entire string. s (dotAll) enhances the dot (.) character, allowing it to match newline characters as well as any other character, which is essential for parsing blocks of text that span multiple lines.

Common Regex Use Cases

Regular expressions are a fundamental skill for software engineers, data scientists, and system administrators. They are heavily used for input validation (ensuring a user enters a valid email address or strong password), data extraction (scraping specific values from HTML or messy log files), string replacement and sanitization, and complex search-and-replace operations in text editors and IDEs. Mastering regex allows you to perform complex text manipulation tasks with just a few lines of code.

100% Private and Client-Side

Security and privacy are built into the core of this tool. All regex matching is executed locally in your browser using JavaScript's native RegExp engine. Your test data, patterns, and results are never sent to any external server. This makes our regex tester perfectly safe to use with proprietary source code, personally identifiable information (PII), sensitive API responses, and production server log files.

Frequently Asked Questions

What regex flags are supported?

The tool supports g (global), i (case-insensitive), m (multiline), and s (dotAll) flags via the quick-toggle buttons or the flags input field.

Are capture groups shown?

Yes. For each match, the match detail list shows the matched text, its position in the string, and the value of every capture group.

What JavaScript regex features are supported?

The tool uses the browser's native JavaScript RegExp engine, so all ES2018+ features are supported including named capture groups, lookbehind assertions, and Unicode mode.

Can I use it for non-JavaScript languages?

The regex engine is JavaScript's, so syntax will be very similar to most languages. However, some features differ slightly from PCRE (PHP, Python, Java). Always test in your target language for production use.

Is my test data private?

Yes. All matching runs locally in your browser. Your test strings — which may contain log data, personal info, or sensitive records — are never sent to a server.
