What is the MIME Type Explorer?
The MIME Type Explorer is a fast, offline dictionary for web developers to map file extensions (like `.json` or `.mp4`) to their corresponding standard Internet media types (also known as MIME types or Content-Types). It features a bidirectional search engine, allowing you to search by extension to find the MIME type, or search by a MIME type (like `audio/mpeg`) to see which file extensions belong to it.
Why are Content-Types important?
When a backend server or CDN delivers a file to a user's web browser, it must include an HTTP header named `Content-Type`. If this header is missing or incorrect, the browser will not know how to handle the file. For example, if you serve a `.js` file but accidentally declare its MIME type as `text/plain` instead of `text/javascript`, the browser's security engine (via strict MIME checking) will block the script from executing, breaking your application.
Fast, Fuzzy, and Offline
Instead of relying on slow server queries, this explorer ships with a curated JSON dictionary of the most common web and enterprise MIME types right in the JavaScript bundle. As you type in the search bar, the engine instantly filters the database using fuzzy matching algorithms. This ensures you find the correct `Content-Type` header instantly without waiting on network latency.
