What is the Base Converter?
The Base Converter is a developer utility designed to instantly translate numbers between the four most common numeral systems used in computer science: Binary (Base 2), Octal (Base 8), Decimal (Base 10), and Hexadecimal (Base 16). Understanding and converting between these bases is fundamental for tasks like reading memory addresses, setting file permissions (chmod), or parsing IP addresses.
How does Bidirectional Conversion work?
Unlike traditional calculators where you select an input base and an output base, this tool is fully bidirectional and simultaneous. You simply paste your number into the corresponding field—whether it's a long binary string or a hex color code—and the other three fields will automatically calculate and update in real-time. This saves time and mental overhead when you need to see all representations at once.
Safe with Massive Numbers
Standard JavaScript numbers lose precision when they exceed the safe integer limit (approx 9 quadrillion). To solve this, our Base Converter uses native BigInt under the hood. This means you can paste massive cryptographic keys or memory hashes into the converter, and it will precisely calculate the exact conversion without any floating-point rounding errors. Furthermore, the entire process runs offline securely within your browser.
